Higher Education Reform Experts South Africa (HERESA) Calls for Leadership for Change in the Higher Education Sector
Within the South African higher education sector, the need for dynamic leadership practices that safeguard against societal calamities is now more urgent than ever. Not only will these solutions advance the transformative changes necessary for the sector to succeed, but they will also ensure that HEIs engage with the realities facing the country.
This Stakeholder Communication presents a series of relevant leadership recommendations that emerged from the Leadership for Change Workshop held by HERESA in March this year. While the list of recommendations offered is not exhaustive, it offers clear, action-driven interventions for promoting a strong culture of leadership within the higher education landscape. Together with entities like the Council on Higher Education (CHE), Universities South Africa (USAf) and other coordinating bodies in Post-School Education and Training (PSET), we believe that we must empower existing leaders to spearhead reforms in their institutions; help potential leaders realise their potential; and work towards creating a visionary culture that benefits the higher education sector, and South Africa at-large.
