Shaping Tomorrow’s Graduates: CUT’s Journey Towards Competency-Based Assessment and Evaluation
Recently, the Central University of Technology’s (Free State) (CUT) Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching (CILT) hosted a workshop focused on the development of a Competence-Based Assessment and Evaluation tool. This initiative aims to standardise approaches used to assess and evaluate graduate attributes competencies across all faculties. Through the Higher Education Reform Experts South Africa (HERESA), CUT has been developing Competency-Based Learning (CBL) strategies, with funding provided through the Technical Assistance Missions (TAMs). As a TAMs expert, Professor Victor Kordas from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden was invited to assist CUT with the finalisation of the CUT-Competency Based Teaching and Learning (CBTL) strategy. This strategy will be supported by an implementation plan which will be shared across institutions. One of the significant outcomes of the workshop was the identification of champions within respective departments, who will execute strategies aligned to CUT’s Learner-Centred Teaching and Learning and Outcome-Based Education System.
