“Meeting of Many Minds: Communities of Practice (CoPs)” is the second series of the HERESA Podcast. Over the episodes of this series, we hope to define a Community of Practice (CoP) by speaking to the four chairs of HERESA’s CoPs established in the fields of Entrepreneurship Education, Work-Integrated Learning (WIL), Competence-Based Learning (CBL) and Curriculum Development for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).
The third episode of the “Meeting of Many Minds” series, titled, ‘Where There’s A WIL, There’s A Way’, features a double billing on Work-Integrated Learning (WIL). As the unemployment crisis in South Africa deepens, it is crucial for higher education institutions to ensure they can produce graduates who are equipped to navigate the challenges of the 21st-century workplace.
To help us understand the value of WIL as a tool for economic empowerment, we spoke to Professor Roelien Brink, Director of Cooperative Education at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), and Dr Henri Jacobs, Director of Work-Integrated Learning & Industry Liaison at the Central University of Technology in the Free State (CUT), who explained exactly what makes this form of learning so beneficial to students and the higher education sector.
